Confirming what you've been asked to do

How to check you understand a request before you start, so you get it right first time.

When someone asks you to do something, a quick check up front saves rework later. Make sure you’re clear on what’s actually needed.

Five things to confirm

  1. What exactly is needed — the output and what “done” looks like.
  2. Why / who for — the purpose and the audience, so you pitch it right.
  3. When it’s due — the deadline, and whether any part is needed sooner.
  4. Format — a document, email, table, slides? Any template to use?
  5. Anything else — who else is involved, where to save it, any limits.

Check your understanding

  • Repeat it back in your own words: “So you need… by… as a…”.
  • Ask any questions now — it’s easier than guessing.
  • If it’s a bigger piece of work, jot the requirements down.

If it’s not clear

It’s fine to ask. A short clarifying question is far better than delivering the wrong thing. If you realise partway through that something’s unclear or has changed, check again rather than pressing on.

Then plan it

Once you’re clear, plan your time — see planning your week and the work-plan templates.
