Purpose
Most office work happens at a desk, so a good set-up matters. This guide helps you work comfortably and avoid the aches and strains that come from a poor set-up. It sits alongside the Office WHS procedure and the pre-start check.
Setting up your workstation
Chair
- Adjust the height so your feet are flat (use a footrest if needed) and knees roughly level with your hips.
- Sit back so your lower back is supported.
Screen
- Top of the screen at about eye level, an arm’s length away.
- Square on to you, to avoid twisting.
- Reduce glare from windows and lights.
Keyboard and mouse
- Close to you, so your shoulders are relaxed and wrists straight.
- Keep them at the same height.
Desk and space
- Keep frequently used items within easy reach.
- Tuck cables away so they aren’t a trip hazard.
Work habits
- Change posture and take a short break from the screen regularly.
- Stand up and move when you can.
- Rest your eyes by looking at something distant now and then.
If something isn’t right
If your set-up is uncomfortable or you have ongoing aches, report it early — ask your supervisor or WHS and Facilities for a workstation check. Report any hazard through the hazard form.
